The Portable License Utility (PLU) is an applicationfor Autodesk software versions 2009 and earlier used to check out alicense from one stand-alone, software-lockedAutodesk product and use that license on another computerthat has the same product and installation type. Autodesksoftware versions 2010 and later use the License Transfer Utility.To use this tool, you must have access to the computer where yoursoftware is installed and activated. If you can no longer accessthe original computer installation, you will need to contactSupport for help.

Another option is to get started quickly with a trial or purchase a subscription. License transfer from one computer toanother is not required to activate subscription software on a newcomputer. Your subscription to Autodesk software includes rights toinstall and activate your software on more than one computer. Foreach computer you wish to use, follow the standard installation procedures for yoursoftware. Refer to your Software License Agreement for more information about softwareusage rights.

To transfer a license using the PLU:

1. Navigate to the directory where your Autodesk software(versions 2009 and older) is installed:
   
   • Windows: Look for the PLU shortcut inthe Start menu, in the same folder as the Autodeskproduct you want to transfer.
   • Mac: Your PLU application is inApplications, in the same folder as the Autodesk product you wantto transfer.
   
   If you can't find the PLU, your product may not support licensetransfers or the PLU was not installed with your product. The PLUis installed by default, but it is an optional component that canbe de-selected in the product installer. You may need to installthe PLU from your original installation media.
   
2. Launch the utility and follow the on-screen instructions forexporting your license. Note: You must have anactive internet connection to use the utility and export yourlicense.
   
3. Install your software on a reconfigured or new computer,including the PLU. Note: You must install the sameversion as the software for which you exported the license or thetransfer will fail.
   
4. Visit the directory where your new installation is located andlaunch the PLU again. Follow the on-screen instructions forimporting your license to the new installation.

Note about Network Licenses: A commonmisconception about the PLU was that it could be used tocheck out a license from a network-licensedAutodesk product for use on another computer. Network licensesfor software are managed by the Autodesk Network LicenseManager (FLEXnet). These network licenses cannot be accessed by thePLU. The PLU works only with standalone software-lockedproducts that use Autodesk Product Activation technology.

Note: Prior to AutoCAD 2005, the distributionof PLU-enabled Autodesk products was limited to software-lockedproducts outside the continental United States.
